The infographic below shows Internet access and usage in India by state. We can clearly observe that from the statistics, the capital city seems to be on top with nearly 100 million Internet connections in Delhi followed by Kerala and Punjab in second and third place with nearly 40 million in each state. The least number of Internet users are in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana with very low Internet penetration rates. India has highest number of Internet users in second place followed by China. India will have more than half a billion Internet users by the end of 2020.

In India, nearly one-third of users accessed Internet for ‘more than one hour’ in urban India, where as in rural India, a similar proportion of users accessed Internet for 15-30 minutes. With better connectivity, quality of service and affordability of mobile Internet, there could be an increase in rural customers spending more time in future.

India is a growing and evolving market and the demand for Internet will drive up more connections with economies of scale. ISPs should ensure their networks scale to cope with increasing demand and integrate with new delivery technologies like FTTH and GPON to provide cost effective services.
